Most children with special needs have greater dental treatment requirements. As pediatric dentists we receive advanced training that focuses on care for children with special needs. While some children may cooperate with Behaviour Guidance Techniques, many would require treatment under general anaesthesia.

Most children with Special Needs may have a greater need for dental treatment for the following reasons:

• Some children have increased susceptibility to tooth decay and gum disease
• Increased chances of falls and oral trauma.
• Prescribed medication or diet detrimental to dental health.
• Physical difficulty in maintaining oral hygiene.

However if dental care is started early and followed conscientiously, every child can enjoy a healthy smile. Dental disease in most cases is preventable.

No dentist can be better equipped than a pediatric dentist to treat a child with special needs. The advanced training that pediatric dentists undergo focuses on care for children with special needs.
